Precision livestock farming represents a genuinely promising development for cattle welfare. The ability to detect illness, lameness, and reproductive problems earlier than traditional observation methods means cattle spend less time suffering before receiving treatment. The automation of monitoring also addresses a fundamental problem in large-scale livestock production — the difficulty of providing adequate individual attention to each animal when herd sizes are large. However, PLF is not a substitute for skilled, attentive stockpersonship and high-quality husbandry. Data only improves welfare if it is acted upon promptly and appropriately, and there is a risk that technology is used to justify reduced human presence on farms rather than to augment it.
