Dairy goat farming shares many welfare challenges with dairy cattle production — including kid separation at birth, painful disbudding, and high production demands — while involving an often-overlooked species whose intelligence and social complexity make these practices particularly significant.
Dairy goat welfare suffers from the same structural tensions as dairy cattle welfare — the biological requirements of milk production (pregnancy, birth, separation) impose welfare costs that cannot be eliminated within the current production model. The pain of disbudding without anaesthesia is well-documented and ethically equivalent to the same procedure in calves. The intelligence and social complexity of goats means that separation stress, isolation, and environmental impoverishment are genuinely significant welfare harms. Smaller-scale dairy goat systems that allow extended kid-on-doe contact, provide enriched environments, and use mandatory anaesthesia for disbudding represent meaningfully better welfare outcomes. The relatively small scale of most dairy goat operations compared to dairy cattle makes these improvements more achievable.
