White muscle disease causes genuine suffering — affected calves and lambs are often found unable to rise, in obvious distress, with stiff painful muscles. In cardiac forms, animals may die suddenly from heart failure without obvious premonitory signs. The condition is most heartbreaking when it affects newborns whose mothers were not adequately supplemented during pregnancy, because the affected animal entered the world already deficient. It is also almost entirely preventable with appropriate supplementation programs tailored to local soil selenium content. The welfare obligation is to identify selenium status through blood or liver testing, implement appropriate supplementation before breeding and during pregnancy, and monitor supplemented animals for both deficiency and toxicity.
