Wolverines present significant welfare challenges in captivity because of their enormous natural ranging needs, their solitary and territorial nature, and their dependence on cold, snowy environments for physical and psychological wellbeing. Standard zoo enclosures are vastly smaller than wild home ranges, and confined wolverines frequently exhibit stereotypic pacing, particularly if environmental enrichment is inadequate. Their need for physical challenge, complex terrain, and problem-solving opportunities must be met through varied enrichment programmes. Provision of snow and sub-zero temperatures is essential in warm climates. Social housing should be carefully managed, as wolverines are rarely tolerant of others except during breeding.
