Rainbow trout in RAS face welfare challenges that differ from traditional flow-through or pond systems. The enclosed environment means that water quality failures affect the entire population rapidly, with few escape options for stressed fish. CO2 buildup is particularly concerning: trout experience this as acute discomfort, reducing feeding and increasing stress behaviours. High stocking densities common in RAS reduce individual space, increase social competition and injury, and amplify stress responses. Trout are neophobic and easily startled — RAS environments with human activity, mechanical noise, and sudden changes in water conditions trigger chronic stress. Welfare monitoring requires regular assessment of fish behaviour, injury rates, and key physiological indicators.
