Copper deficiency — both primary (inadequate dietary copper) and secondary (antagonised by other minerals) — is one of the most common trace mineral deficiencies in grazing cattle, causing diverse welfare-significant health problems.
Copper deficiency causes a range of welfare impacts across different body systems. Swayback in calves is particularly severe — affected calves cannot walk normally, fall easily, and may be unable to suckle, causing starvation alongside neurological distress. Bone fragility leads to spontaneous fractures during normal activity — a painful and debilitating welfare emergency in adult cattle. Anaemia from copper-deficient iron metabolism causes chronic fatigue and reduced exercise capacity. Immune suppression from copper deficiency increases susceptibility to infections, compounding welfare burden. Because secondary deficiency can occur even when dietary copper appears adequate, assessment must include antagonist mineral levels — farms with high molybdenum or sulphur in pasture or feed may need supplementation despite adequate-seeming copper.
