Musth is a hormonally driven state in male elephants associated with heightened aggression and testosterone, presenting significant welfare challenges for zoo management of bull elephants and their keepers.
Musth presents a genuine welfare dilemma in zoo management. The hormonal state is a natural part of male elephant biology — suppressing it entirely raises questions about the welfare costs of preventing a normal physiological cycle. Yet bulls in active musth in zoo settings are extremely dangerous: their aggression is not directed at keepers specifically but they are highly reactive and unpredictable, and fatal incidents have occurred in facilities using free contact management. Protected contact systems — where keepers never enter the elephant space and all management is conducted through barriers — provide safety without chemical suppression of musth. The welfare question for the bull is different: restrained in a facility without free-roaming and unable to compete for females during peak reproductive motivation, the bull experiences the motivational state without the natural behavioural outlets. Providing appropriate space, mud wallows, complex terrain, and tactile contact through barriers addresses some but not all of these welfare needs.
