As large ectotherms, Komodos require a substantial thermal gradient to thermoregulate effectively — inadequate basking temperatures cause chronic immune suppression, poor digestion, and reduced healing capacity. Enclosures without appropriate cool retreats prevent thermoregulatory behaviour and create chronic thermal stress. The aggressive territorial nature of adult Komodos makes group housing outside managed breeding programmes a welfare risk: fights cause serious, potentially fatal injuries. Keeper relationships with individual Komodos — developed through positive reinforcement training — allow voluntary health checks, weighing, and feeding management that would otherwise require dangerous close approaches. Enrichment using prey scent trails, varied prey items, and novel objects addresses the olfactory predatory motivation of a species that in the wild spends significant time in active prey pursuit.
