Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious, often fatal disease primarily affecting unvaccinated puppies, causing severe haemorrhagic gastroenteritis and immune suppression that demands intensive supportive care to survive.
Canine parvovirus causes intense acute suffering in affected puppies. The destruction of intestinal crypt cells causes rapid progression from vomiting and diarrhoea to haemorrhagic enteritis — dogs lose blood in their stools, become profoundly dehydrated, and develop secondary bacteraemia from bacterial translocation through the damaged gut wall. The pain and distress of haemorrhagic gastroenteritis is severe, and the bone marrow suppression that eliminates neutrophils prevents normal immune response to secondary bacterial infections. Affected puppies are profoundly ill within 24-48 hours of symptom onset. Intensive care — IV fluid resuscitation, electrolyte management, antiemetic therapy, nutritional support, and antibiotic coverage — transforms an otherwise fatal disease to 70-90% survival, but this requires 5-7 days of hospitalisation that is itself stressful for young puppies separated from familiar environments. Prevention through vaccination is so effective and inexpensive relative to treatment costs and suffering that unvaccinated puppy deaths represent a preventable welfare failure. Rescue organisations that adopt unvaccinated dogs and fail to vaccinate promptly bear significant responsibility for preventable disease.
