Pygmy marmosets are the world's smallest primates with highly specialised social and dietary requirements that make their welfare in captivity dependent on stable family group housing and gummivore diet provision.
Pygmy marmoset welfare in captivity is critically dependent on two factors: stable family group social structure and dietary adequacy. As cooperative breeders, pygmy marmosets live in family units where all members contribute to infant care — the male carries twins for the majority of each day while the female recovers from the substantial energetic cost of carrying and delivering twins. Disrupting this family structure by removing individuals causes severe distress for all remaining members. Isolated individuals show rapid physiological and behavioural deterioration. The dietary challenge is equally significant: as specialist gummivores, their dentition and digestive system are adapted for processing tree gum, and captive diets must replicate this specialisation. Gum arabic feeders inserted into rough-barked substrate allow natural gouging behaviour. UV-B lighting is not optional — without it, metabolic bone disease causes pathological fractures in these tiny animals. The combination of correct social management and dietary provision produces animals that show natural family behaviours, including twin births and cooperative infant care.
