Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in dogs causes chronic gastrointestinal discomfort and nutritional compromise, requiring dietary management and immunosuppressive therapy to achieve remission and good quality of life.
Canine IBD creates chronic welfare harm through sustained gastrointestinal discomfort, nutritional compromise, and the unpredictability of disease flares. Dogs with uncontrolled IBD experience nausea, abdominal cramping, and diarrhoea that disrupts sleep, normal behaviour, and appetite. Weight loss from malabsorption creates the paradox of a dog that eats but cannot maintain condition — owners often see a thin, apparently hungry dog despite adequate feeding. The diagnostic process requires anaesthesia for endoscopic biopsy — a welfare cost that enables accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment targeting. Dietary management with novel protein or hydrolysed protein diets achieves remission in approximately 50% of cases, avoiding the need for immunosuppression and its side effects. For cases requiring medication, careful dose management minimising corticosteroid burden while controlling inflammation improves quality of life substantially. Protein-losing enteropathy represents the most serious welfare challenge: hypoalbuminaemia causes peripheral oedema, ascites, and respiratory compromise that significantly diminishes quality of life and carries high mortality even with intensive treatment.
