Giraffe welfare in zoos is substantially influenced by feeding station design and temperature management. The most welfare-damaging compromise in many zoo giraffe facilities is low feeding points that force animals to adopt the wide-legged drinking posture repeatedly for routine feeding — a position that is energetically costly and increases vulnerability. Elevated feeding stations at 3-5 metres height allow natural browsing posture and reduce musculoskeletal stress. Temperature management is critical in cold-climate zoos: giraffes are adapted to sub-Saharan environments and are extremely cold-sensitive, requiring heated indoor housing that maintains temperatures above 15°C throughout winter. Keeper relationships built through hand-feeding from elevated platforms allow daily health observation, weight monitoring, and visual inspection of hard-to-examine areas like feet and neck. Social management should reflect the fission-fusion nature of wild giraffe society — stable female groups with calves and separate bachelor male facilities provide appropriate social contexts. Ground-level water access must accommodate the spreading posture required for drinking without creating joint stress.
