Welfare Considerations

A scouring calf experiences significant pain from gut cramping, weakness from dehydration, and hypothermia if left recumbent in cold conditions. Welfare-conscious producers monitor calves twice daily, assess skin turgor to estimate dehydration severity, and initiate electrolyte therapy without delay. Isolation of sick calves reduces pathogen spread but must include continued milk feeding alongside electrolytes. Intravenous fluids are indicated for calves unable to stand. Early intervention dramatically reduces suffering and mortality.
