Cold stress syndrome causes significant suffering in manatees who become too weak to maintain buoyancy and are stranded on beaches. Recovery requires weeks of intensive veterinary care. Manatees who have learned to rely on power plant warm water are particularly vulnerable when plants close and alternatives are insufficient.
