Beak trimming reduces the severity of injurious pecking in layer hens but is itself a painful procedure with lasting sensory consequences. Evidence-based alternatives including enrichment, low stocking density, and genetic selection are progressively replacing routine trimming.
Trimmed hens experience acute pain during and after the procedure and show chronic alterations in beak nerve function that may constitute ongoing neuroma pain. However, the welfare harm of severe feather pecking and cannibalism in untrimmed, high-density flocks must also be weighed. The welfare balance shifts decisively toward avoiding trimming when management conditions — enrichment, space, light management, and genetic selection — adequately control pecking. Welfare policy is moving toward requiring management improvements that eliminate the need for trimming rather than accepting trimming as a permanent solution.
