Providing positive experiences and enrichment to pigs is increasingly recognized as important for welfare beyond simply avoiding negative states.
A complete account of pig welfare requires both reducing negative experiences and actively providing positive ones. Pigs that can explore, play, and engage in natural behaviors including rooting and social interaction have better welfare even when physical needs are met. Shifting welfare frameworks to include positive experience is an important ethical advance.
