Wild Bonobo Conservation and Welfare in the DRC

Bonobos are endangered great apes found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo, south of the Congo River. Their matriarchal, cooperative social structure makes them unique among great apes, and their welfare is threatened by bushmeat hunting and habitat destruction in an active conflict zone.

Welfare Considerations

Bonobo orphans in the bushmeat trade arrive at Lola ya Bonobo having witnessed their mothers killed and having been transported in stressful conditions for days. Social rehabilitation of traumatised infants requires months of one-on-one human caregiver relationships before gradual introduction to peer groups. The sanctuary reintroduction programme releases rehabilitated bonobos to protected forests, with long-term monitoring. Field conservation requires protection of bonobo range from logging and mining concessions and community engagement with villages that have traditionally hunted bonobos.
