Japanese quail are increasingly farmed for eggs and meat in both commercial and small-scale operations. Their rapid growth and small size make them vulnerable to welfare problems from overcrowding, inappropriate housing, and inadequate monitoring.
Quail in overcrowded battery conditions show high rates of feather pecking, toe and head injuries, and stereotypic behaviours indicating motivational frustration. Their small size means injuries are often not detected until they are severe, and individual welfare assessment across large flocks is impractical without systematic sampling. Welfare-conscious small-scale and niche producers provide adequate space for movement and wing flapping, dust bathing substrate, litter floors rather than wire, low stocking density, and monitoring of injury prevalence at regular intervals. Consumer interest in higher-welfare quail products is growing but certification standards lag behind other poultry species.
