Fennec foxes are increasingly popular as exotic pets but have highly specialised needs that most owners cannot meet, resulting in chronic stress, behavioural problems, and shortened lifespans.
Fennec foxes are physiologically and behaviourally ill-suited to domestic life. Their nocturnal activity peaks conflict with human household patterns, and their need to dig extensively cannot be met in typical homes. Chronic noise exposure from televisions, children, and general household activity causes ongoing stress in animals with acute hearing. They rarely form the same kind of bond with humans as domesticated dogs or cats, and many owners abandon them when the novelty wears off. Rescue organisations for exotic pets are overwhelmed with surrendered fennecs. Their welfare needs are simply incompatible with typical household environments, regardless of the owner's best intentions.
