The depopulation of spent laying hens at the end of their productive life is one of the largest-scale welfare challenges in poultry farming, with methods varying enormously in the suffering they cause.
The depopulation of laying hens at 72-80 weeks of age involves the killing of hundreds of millions of individual animals with varying degrees of suffering depending on method and operator skill. Manual cervical dislocation can cause prolonged unconsciousness if performed incorrectly. Gas killing with CO2 causes aversion and distress before unconsciousness. Nitrogen-based systems cause loss of consciousness more rapidly. Transportation of spent hens to processing facilities exposes already fragile birds to capture stress and physical injury from broken bones that are weakened by a lifetime of egg production. The scale of end-of-lay depopulation makes it an enormous welfare priority deserving more research, regulation, and industry attention than it currently receives.
