Surgical castration without anaesthesia causes acute pain evidenced by vocalisation, escape behaviour, and elevated stress hormones. Pain can persist for days after the procedure. The welfare cost is substantial and has been formally recognised by EU institutions, yet practice change has been slow in many member states. Immunocastration eliminates the surgical pain while achieving equivalent boar taint control — welfare outcomes are dramatically better. Detection technology removes the need for any castration by identifying the small proportion of carcasses that carry taint at slaughter. The continued prevalence of painful castration reflects economic inertia rather than scientific necessity. Consumer and retailer pressure for pain-free pork production is an important driver of change.
