Long-distance live animal transport represents one of the most significant collective welfare challenges in global agriculture. Individual cattle can spend days on trucks or ships in conditions that cause measurable suffering — elevated cortisol, suppressed immune function, injuries from crowding, and death. Slaughter at origin with export of chilled or frozen meat is technologically straightforward and economically viable for most markets. The primary obstacles are trade convention, market access requirements, and political resistance from producer countries with financial interests in live export.
