Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is the most common cause of urinary signs in young to middle-aged cats, with stress as the primary trigger — making environmental enrichment and stress reduction central to both prevention and management.
FIC causes genuine suffering — cats in acute flares are in pain and distress, frequently attempting to urinate with little success, and sometimes vocalising. The chronic, relapsing nature of the condition means affected cats can experience repeated painful episodes throughout their lives if underlying stressors are not addressed. The welfare imperative is to identify and reduce the specific stressors triggering individual cats' episodes — multi-cat household tensions, inadequate litter trays, reduced hiding opportunities, or changes in routine. Environmental enrichment that provides predictability, control, and resource access dramatically reduces FIC recurrence frequency in many cats.
