The African wildcat is the ancestor of the domestic cat, but rampant hybridisation with domestic and feral cats threatens the genetic integrity of wild populations, with welfare and conservation implications for both species.
African and European wildcat welfare is threatened by hybridisation in multiple ways. Hybrid animals may carry domestic cat diseases to which wildcats have lower resistance. Wildcats caught in traps set for feral cats or as accidental bycatch in predator control suffer acute welfare harm. Captive breeding programmes for genetically pure wildcats must carefully manage housing to preserve wild behaviour and reduce human imprinting. The conservation welfare goal is to maintain populations capable of wild survival — which requires minimising human contact throughout the captive phase and ensuring appropriate prey-catching skills are maintained before release.
