Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) is a major welfare and economic problem in cattle across temperate regions, causing pathological liver damage, production losses, and increasingly, resistance to the flukicides used for control.
Liver fluke causes significant welfare harm — acute disease kills cattle rapidly, while chronic disease causes a prolonged deterioration in condition, productivity, and immune function. The welfare consequences of flukicide resistance are severe: farms relying on ineffective treatments may believe they are protecting their cattle while allowing fluke burdens to accumulate. Resistance testing, strategic dosing, and pasture management are essential components of sustainable control. Cattle in good body condition with healthy immune systems are better able to tolerate low-level fluke burdens — nutrition and general health management are complementary welfare interventions alongside flukicide treatment.
