Captive chimpanzees are among the most difficult animals to provide adequate welfare for due to their cognitive complexity, social needs, and physical requirements. Chimpanzees in inadequate conditions develop depression, self-injury, and stereotypic behaviors. Only large, complex social groups with diverse environments can begin to meet their needs.
