Okapis are one of the most stress-sensitive animals kept in zoos. Their welfare requires quiet, stable environments, low visitor density, and management protocols that minimise unpredictable disturbance.
The okapi is an example of a species for which the welfare challenge in captivity is fundamentally about creating an environment calm enough to prevent chronic stress. Unlike more behaviourally flexible species, okapis are poorly suited to the noise, novelty, and social complexity of most zoo environments. The best okapi-keeping institutions structure their husbandry around minimising unpredictability: stable keeper teams, consistent routines, quiet exhibit design, and controlled visitor access. Measuring welfare through faecal glucocorticoid monitoring has helped identify which management variables most affect okapi stress levels, enabling evidence-based improvements. This work represents best practice in applying welfare science to a particularly sensitive captive species.
