The cage-free debate is more nuanced than simple messaging suggests. Barn systems are genuinely welfare-superior to barren battery cages and provide important freedoms — movement, perching at height, real dust-bathing, and social choice. However, the assumption that cage-free automatically means better welfare ignores the management challenges of barn systems: keel bone fractures, injurious pecking, and cannibalism all require active and skilled management to control. The best barn systems with competent stockpeople and evidence-based management achieve substantially better welfare than cages; the worst barn systems can be worse. Investment in stockperson training and evidence-based barn management is as important as the physical system change.
