Anthelmintic (wormer) resistance in cattle parasites is a growing threat to effective control of worms that cause significant production losses and welfare compromise. Strategic, evidence-based use is essential to preserve drug efficacy.
The welfare implications of anthelmintic resistance are direct and serious: if effective anthelmintics are lost, heavily parasitised cattle will suffer from the clinical consequences of worm burden — diarrhoea, anaemia, severe weight loss, and debilitation — without adequate treatment options. The cattle most vulnerable are young stock in their first grazing season. Responsible anthelmintic stewardship is therefore not merely an economic or environmental concern but a genuine welfare issue: preserving drug efficacy protects future generations of cattle from a welfare burden that will become unmanageable if resistance continues to develop unchecked. Farmers who contribute to resistance development through inappropriate use are compromising the welfare of their own future animals.
