Pigs have strong play motivations that are rarely accommodated in intensive systems, despite evidence that play promotes positive welfare and indicates good mental states.
Pigs are naturally playful animals whose play behavior serves as a positive indicator of good welfare. Intensive systems that deny pigs space and enrichment prevent this natural behavior entirely. Providing rooting materials, space for running, and novel objects costs little but significantly improves pig welfare. Play should be recognized as an indicator and goal in pig welfare assessment.
