Sun bears are exploited in bile farming operations in Southeast Asia and are also victims of the illegal pet trade. Sanctuaries and conservation organisations are working to address both issues while protecting wild populations.

Welfare Considerations

The welfare situation of farmed sun bears is among the most extreme in the world. Animals kept for years in crush cages experience profound physical and psychological suffering: muscle atrophy, joint disease, dental problems from cage-biting, liver disease from repeated bile extraction, and severe behavioural pathology from total movement restriction and social isolation. This suffering continues throughout the animal's lifetime for a product that has a readily available synthetic substitute. Rescued bears at centres like BSBCC often require years of rehabilitation to recover basic locomotor and social skills. The scale of this industry — thousands of bears in Vietnam alone — represents an enormous welfare burden that consumer and policy pressure can help eliminate.
