Artificial light at night is a major threat to sea turtle nesting and hatchling orientation. Light management near nesting beaches is a low-cost, high-impact welfare and conservation intervention.
The welfare consequences of light pollution for sea turtles are direct: misoriented hatchlings experience the distress of prolonged crawling in the wrong direction, dehydration in daylight, burns from hot asphalt, and ultimately death in the vast majority of cases. Female sea turtles disturbed during nesting by artificial light experience the stress of an incomplete nesting attempt, forced to return to the sea carrying eggs they cannot safely deposit. These welfare harms occur across hundreds of miles of developed coastline every nesting season. The interventions required are simple and inexpensive — changing bulb colour and shielding fixtures from beach view — making this one of the highest welfare-impact-to-cost-ratio conservation actions available to coastal communities.
