Smolts are in a uniquely vulnerable physiological state, undergoing rapid hormonal change while simultaneously being transported, sorted, and transferred to sea cages. This combination of biological stress and handling stress creates compounded welfare challenges. Poor water quality during smolt holding — including elevated CO2 from recirculating systems — can impair gill function and behavior. Abrupt or mistimed seawater transfer causes osmoregulatory failure, resulting in visible distress and mortality. Industry-wide welfare scoring systems for smolts remain less developed than for grow-out fish.
