Cattle Phosphorus Nutrition and Welfare

Phosphorus is a critical mineral for cattle bone health, reproduction, and energy metabolism, and both deficiency and excess have significant welfare and environmental consequences.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Phosphorus deficiency causes welfare problems that develop slowly and are often missed until advanced. Animals with pica spend energy seeking and consuming inappropriate materials, risk intestinal blockage or botulism from bone chewing, and suffer reduced reproductive performance. Bone weakness from chronic deficiency causes pain on movement and increased fracture risk. Downer cow syndrome associated with periparturient hypophosphatemia causes an inability to rise that is both painful and stressful. Nutritional monitoring through blood testing and feed analysis is the most effective preventive measure, and is a marker of good herd management quality.
