Chicks with soda anklets experience progressive mobility restriction that prevents them from following the flock or accessing food — without rescue, these individuals die. The single-site vulnerability of the species means local industrial, agricultural, or climate disruptions can affect a significant fraction of the global population simultaneously. Conservation of the specific alkaline chemistry of key soda lakes is therefore not just an ecological concern but a welfare imperative for millions of individual birds.
