Rodents in research are the most numerous laboratory animals yet historically receive the least welfare consideration. Social housing, environmental enrichment, and opportunities to burrow and explore dramatically improve their welfare with minimal impact on most experimental outcomes. Taking rodent welfare seriously is both an ethical imperative and scientifically sound.
