However, many schemes remain input-based — specifying permitted stocking densities or equipment — rather than measuring actual fish welfare outcomes. The most meaningful certifications require documented sea lice thresholds, mandatory pre-slaughter stunning, maximum stocking densities, and regular welfare assessments by trained personnel. Consumers choosing certified salmon products, and retailers demanding certified supply chains, create economic incentives for producers to improve. Ongoing research into salmon sentience and pain responses continues to strengthen the scientific case for higher welfare standards.
