The slaughter of billions of farmed fish annually receives almost no welfare attention despite evidence that fish experience pain and fear during killing processes.
Farmed fish are typically killed using methods that cause prolonged consciousness and suffering. Live chilling in ice water causes a prolonged, likely stressful loss of consciousness. The massive scale of farmed fish slaughter means that even small improvements in killing methods reduce enormous amounts of suffering. Adopting humane electrical stunning and spiking methods is technically feasible.
