Modern facilities that provide multiple bamboo species in large quantities, naturalistic enclosures with climbing and water features, and appropriate seasonal management of activity and diet produce pandas with markedly better welfare outcomes. The tension between conservation value and individual welfare is minimal for pandas: facilities that prioritise individual welfare also achieve better reproductive outcomes. Panda diplomacy loans should be conditioned on adherence to welfare standards that go beyond minimum requirements.
