Narwhals are among the most elusive and least studied large marine mammals, facing welfare threats from sea ice entrapment, subsistence hunting, and increasing anthropogenic disturbance in the Arctic.
Narwhal welfare is shaped by their exceptional sensitivity to disturbance and their specialized dependence on Arctic sea ice environments. Research has revealed striking physiological stress responses to human-caused noise: narwhals exposed to boat engines show extreme bradycardia (slowed heart rate) followed by intense swimming effort — a "freeze-fright" response that combines cardiac stress with extreme muscular exertion, a physiologically dangerous combination. This response appears to be an evolutionarily inappropriate generalization of anti-predator behavior to novel modern sounds. Sea ice entrapment events cause mass mortality with significant individual suffering — trapped narwhals exhaust themselves maintaining breathing holes before dying. Climate change is altering the sea ice patterns narwhals depend on in ways that may increase both entrapment risk and the uncertainty of their seasonal movements.
