Enriched cages were introduced as a welfare improvement over conventional battery cages, but remain highly contested as advocates argue they still fail to meet hens' fundamental behavioral needs.
The welfare status of enriched cage systems is genuinely contested among animal welfare scientists and advocates. Compared to conventional battery cages — where 500 cm² per hen prevents virtually all normal movement — enriched cages represent a measurable improvement: hens can stand upright, spread their wings, access a nest area, and use perches. Against this, the space allowance is still inadequate for free movement, the scratch area is too small for meaningful substrate foraging, group size of 40-80 hens exceeds natural flocking capacity, and keel bone fracture rates remain high. The core welfare argument against enriched cages is that they perpetuate confinement-based systems that fail to meet highly motivated behavioral needs, particularly dust bathing and foraging, at a scale affecting hundreds of millions of individual animals. Cage-free systems, though not perfect, consistently produce better welfare outcomes on most indicators.
