Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is one of the most common hereditary skeletal conditions in dogs, causing progressive joint degeneration and pain that requires long-term welfare-focused management.
Hip dysplasia causes a lifetime of welfare compromise in affected dogs that is often invisible to casual observation. Dogs are adept at masking pain through behavioural adaptation — reducing activity, moving cautiously, and avoiding postures that cause discomfort — without showing the dramatic signs owners might expect. Subclinical pain affects mood, social interaction, and enjoyment of activities that are central to canine wellbeing. Multimodal pain management — combining NSAIDs, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and weight management — significantly improves quality of life even in dogs that are not surgical candidates. Breeding programmes using hip scoring have demonstrably reduced the incidence of severe dysplasia in several breeds. Responsible breeding, appropriate puppy nutrition and exercise, and regular pain assessment throughout life are the pillars of CHD welfare management.
