The transition period represents the convergence of multiple welfare challenges for dairy cows. The physiological demands of late pregnancy, calving, and the onset of lactation simultaneously stress the immune system, calcium metabolism, and energy balance. Milk fever causes muscle weakness and recumbency — cows may be unable to rise, leading to additional injuries and distress. Ketosis impairs neurological function and appetite, reducing the cow's ability to consume the feed she needs to meet energy demands. Displaced abomasum causes pain and reduced feed intake that compounds weight loss and condition deterioration. Many of these conditions are interconnected, with one disease predisposing to another in a cascade. Proactive transition management — appropriate dry cow nutrition, comfortable housing with adequate lying space, careful monitoring of blood metabolites, and prompt treatment — substantially reduces the welfare burden of this critical period.
