White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the most devastating pathogen in global shrimp aquaculture, causing mass mortalities that represent a severe welfare emergency as well as major economic losses.
White spot syndrome in farmed shrimp raises welfare questions that exist at the intersection of scientific uncertainty and the scale of suffering involved. The evidence for nociception — the capacity to detect and respond to harmful stimuli — in decapod crustaceans including shrimp has grown substantially, and several countries have extended legal welfare protection to decapods. WSSV causes systemic viral replication that destroys tissues and culminates in rapid death; whether shrimp experience this as suffering is uncertain but increasingly plausible. The scale of WSSV mortality events — billions of shrimp dying rapidly in mass events annually — means the welfare stakes are enormous even under precautionary assumptions. Prevention through biosecurity reduces WSSV incidence and is simultaneously the best welfare and commercial outcome. Investment in disease-resistant genetics and improved pond management offers the most sustainable path to reducing WSSV-related suffering.
