Myasthenia gravis causes significant and multi-system welfare compromise that demands intensive management. Muscle weakness limits normal activity and enjoyment of exercise; megaoesophagus causes distress from repeated regurgitation and the risk of aspiration; pneumonia causes severe respiratory distress. The management of megaoesophagus — feeding small meals from elevated positions, keeping dogs upright for 20-30 minutes after eating — is time-intensive and requires consistent owner commitment. Dogs that aspirate frequently experience recurrent pneumonia with its associated fever, coughing, and breathing difficulty. Despite the severity of disease, many dogs with MG achieve spontaneous remission within 6-18 months with appropriate treatment, meaning that intensive welfare management during the active disease phase can lead to full recovery. Regular quality-of-life monitoring and open veterinarian-owner communication about prognosis and treatment burden are essential.
