Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition in which the pancreas fails to produce sufficient digestive enzymes, causing malnutrition and significant welfare compromise that requires lifelong enzyme supplementation.
EPI causes significant welfare compromise through both the physical effects of malnutrition and the behavioural consequences of chronic hunger. Dogs consuming large amounts of food but unable to absorb its nutrients experience persistent hunger and energy deficit — reflected in ravenous appetite, food-seeking behaviour, and coprophagia that owners find distressing. Weight loss can be severe: affected dogs may lose 30-40% of body weight before diagnosis. The large, foul-smelling faeces associated with malabsorption cause discomfort and disrupt normal elimination behaviour. Fortunately, EPI responds well to enzyme replacement therapy — most dogs show dramatic improvement within weeks, regaining weight and returning to normal faecal consistency and appetite. Lifelong enzyme supplementation is required, and the cost and practicality of this represents an ongoing welfare consideration for owners. Early diagnosis significantly reduces the duration and severity of welfare compromise.
