Whether honeybees and other insects are sentient in morally significant ways remains scientifically debated, but evidence of nociception and stress responses is accumulating. Beyond individual bee welfare, colony collapse disrupts the social structure and collective functioning of a superorganism that has evolved over millions of years. For wild bee species, population collapse represents individual suffering at scale — starvation, disease, and habitat loss. The agricultural and ecological consequences of pollinator decline also harm the many vertebrate species that depend on the plant communities bees sustain. Supporting pollinator populations is both a biodiversity and a potential welfare imperative.
