Pacific salmon populations are declining across much of their range from dam blockages, habitat degradation, and climate change, affecting individual welfare and ecosystem health.
Salmon blocked from spawning habitat by dams cannot complete their life cycle, dying without fulfilling their biological imperative after crossing thousands of miles of ocean. This represents both individual welfare failure and ecological loss. Dam removal, which has proven highly effective at restoring salmon runs, is the most direct intervention available.
