Epilepsy is the most common chronic neurological disorder in dogs. Idiopathic (genetic) epilepsy affects approximately 0.6–0.75% of the canine population. Effective anticonvulsant management can significantly reduce seizure frequency and severity.
Epilepsy affects dog welfare through the seizures themselves — which are frightening and physically exhausting — and through the post-ictal period of confusion, disorientation, and sometimes aggression lasting hours after a seizure. Long-term anticonvulsant medication can cause sedation, ataxia, increased appetite and weight gain (phenobarbitone), or behaviour changes. Regular monitoring allows dose optimisation to balance seizure control with medication side effects. Dogs with well-controlled epilepsy on appropriate medication can have excellent quality of life. Those with poorly controlled seizures, especially cluster events or status epilepticus, experience repeated significant distress. Owner education about emergency management is critical to preventing avoidable suffering during breakthrough seizures.
