Canine epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders in dogs. Appropriate diagnosis, antiepileptic therapy, and owner education significantly improve welfare outcomes for epileptic dogs and their families.
Uncontrolled seizures cause significant welfare harm through the physical trauma of convulsions, postictal distress lasting hours after seizures, and the chronic anxiety of unpredictable episodes. Dogs with frequent uncontrolled seizures often show behavioural changes including increased anxiety and cognitive changes between episodes. Welfare management requires accurate diagnosis, appropriate antiepileptic drug selection and dose titration, and clear owner education about emergency management. Many dogs achieve excellent seizure control with proper treatment.
